This is a low power photomicrograph of liver in a child with extrahepatic biliary atresia. This is a trichrome stain, in which collagen stains blue, and other elements stain red. It is the best way to assess the degree of fibrosis in a tissue. Here it is easy to see that the portal triads are expanded in a jagged fashion by periportal fibrosis.
